What is ASF?

ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's proprietary container for Windows Media content. It can hold WMV (Windows Media Video) and WMA (Windows Media Audio) streams, along with extensive metadata, DRM protection, and script commands for interactive content. ASF files typically use .wmv or .wma extensions, but .asf is the generic extension. The format was designed for streaming over networks with error resilience.

ASF is used for Windows Media streaming services, DRM-protected media, legacy video archiving, and corporate video distribution. Popular in the early 2000s for internet video before Flash and MP4 dominance. Still encountered in enterprise environments using Windows Media Services for streaming. The format supports multiple bitrate streams (MBR) for adaptive streaming based on connection speed.
