HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a modern image file format developed by the MPEG group. It's the default photo format used by Apple devices since iOS 11 (2017) and offers significantly better compression than traditional JPG files while maintaining the same image quality.
Why Did Apple Choose HEIC?
Apple adopted HEIC because it saves storage space without compromising image quality. A HEIC file is typically 50% smaller than an equivalent JPG file, meaning you can store twice as many photos on your iPhone or iPad.
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container and uses HEVC (H.265) compression, the same technology used for 4K video compression.

How to Open HEIC Files
On iPhone/iPad
HEIC files open automatically in the Photos app. No special software needed.
On Mac
macOS (High Sierra and newer) supports HEIC natively. Double-click to open in Preview or Photos app.
On Windows
Windows 10/11 requires the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store (free). After installation, HEIC files open in the Photos app.
On Android
Support varies by device. Android 10+ has native support, but older versions may need third-party apps.

- Tap Formats
- Select Most Compatible (this saves as JPG)
