What is a HEIC File?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a modern image file format developed by the MPEG group. It's the default photo format used by Apple devices since iOS 11 (2017) and offers significantly better compression than traditional JPG files while maintaining the same image quality.

Why Did Apple Choose HEIC?

Apple adopted HEIC because it saves storage space without compromising image quality. A HEIC file is typically 50% smaller than an equivalent JPG file, meaning you can store twice as many photos on your iPhone or iPad.

Quick Fact:
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container and uses HEVC (H.265) compression, the same technology used for 4K video compression.

HEIC vs JPG: Key Differences

  • File Size: HEIC files are 40-50% smaller than JPG
  • Image Quality: Better quality at smaller file sizes
  • Transparency Support: HEIC supports alpha channels (like PNG)
  • Multiple Images: Can store multiple images in one file (burst photos, Live Photos)
  • 16-bit Color: HEIC supports more colors than JPG's 8-bit
  • Compatibility: JPG is more universally supported

How to Open HEIC Files

On iPhone/iPad

HEIC files open automatically in the Photos app. No special software needed.

On Mac

macOS (High Sierra and newer) supports HEIC natively. Double-click to open in Preview or Photos app.

On Windows

Windows 10/11 requires the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store (free). After installation, HEIC files open in the Photos app.

On Android

Support varies by device. Android 10+ has native support, but older versions may need third-party apps.

Common HEIC Problems and Solutions

Problem: Can't Open HEIC on Older Devices

Solution: Convert HEIC to JPG using our free converter, or change iPhone settings to save photos as JPG.

Problem: Website Won't Accept HEIC Upload

Solution: Most websites only accept JPG/PNG. Convert your HEIC files before uploading.

Problem: Sharing HEIC via Email

Solution: Recipients on non-Apple devices may not be able to view HEIC. Convert to JPG first.

Should You Use HEIC or JPG?

Use HEIC when:

  • You're staying within the Apple ecosystem
  • Storage space is limited
  • You want the best quality-to-size ratio
  • You need to store burst photos or Live Photos

Use JPG when:

  • You need to share photos with non-Apple users
  • You're uploading to websites or social media
  • You need maximum compatibility
  • You're working with older software

How to Change iPhone to Save JPG Instead of HEIC

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible (this saves as JPG)

Note: This will use more storage space, but photos will be compatible with all devices.

Pro Tip:
Keep HEIC on your iPhone to save space, but use our HEIC to JPG converter when you need to share photos with others.
